Extract from the essay
Graphic Design, as I understand it, is a profession. It is a job. Although the practice usually involves artistic skills, the design brief asks for an objective to achieve, a problem to solve or a message to communicate. And usually a designer is being paid to do so.
I do not design merely for the sake of creating something appealing or because there is something inside me that drives me to express it visually.
It is not about creating niceness but about gathering "nice" elements according to a previously stated purpose.
If the outcome is perceived as something nice, or whatever subjective adjective you fancy, it will depend on every different user of the outcome; and obviously if the initial purpose is to become appealing to a target it will have to trigger the right sensations on that target audience, but not necessarily on others.
